Today’s Shirt.Woot shows us that even cephalopods have off days. I sure hope this guy doesn’t have a meeting today, because I hear Corporate is looking for any excuse to lay people off.
This shirt (Kelly Green in a variety of Mens, Womens, and Kids sizes) is $10, today only, while supplies last. As far as I can tell, most Woot designs are re-offered later for about $15, but jump on it now if you want to the cheap price. Buy it NOW (Wed., March 16) from Shirt.Woot!
T-shirt Tuesday: “Kraken Snackin'” from Threadless
March 8, 2011
Hey look, it’s another shirt from Threadless! Clearly inspired by The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, “Kraken Snackin'” depicts the fate that befalls so many unfortunate sailing vessels. There’s a lot to like about this design; the blood-red tentacles, the massive disc of the full moon, the snapping rigging lines, the tiny airborne sailor…but I think my favorite detail is the lone parrot winging its way to freedom.
Guys and Girls Tees (Asphalt Regular Fit) still available in all sizes for $20. Buy it now from Threadless!

Google honors Jules Verne’s 183rd birthday
February 8, 2011
Here are two different screen shots of today’s Google Doodle, an interactive journey to the depths of the ocean as viewed through a series of brass portholes (naturally spelling out the word “Google”). When you mouse over the little joy stick, you can spy a cornucopia of sea life, including: flying fish, jellyfish, a Megamouth shark, a trio of nautiluses, and the tentacles of an enormous cephalopod.

Vintage Vampires
February 4, 2011
The Tumblr blog community is a bountiful source of awesome images of all kinds. However, it is all too common that source or artist attribution is left out of the original post. Take this vintage illustration of Vampyroteuthis infernalis. I’m pretty sure it’s from a public domain book of zoological drawings, and I’ve possibly even posted something from that same source before. But I don’t really know. What I do know is that Vampyroteuthis has never been creepier. One could almost believe that it truly is a vampire squid!

T-shirt Tuesday: “Bearded Squid Attack” from Tender Loving Empire
February 1, 2011
I see your Octopus with a Moustache, and I raise you Bearded Squid Attack!
This shirt, which obviously depicts some kind of primordial squid god (maybe Cthulhu’s dad?), is the work of graphic designer Lloyd Eugene Winter IV. It is available for actual purchase at Tender Loving Empire. It is printed with non-toxic, water-based ink in Silver, on Heathered Charcoal American Apparel track shirt (“the coziest shirt around”). Both Guys and Gals shirts will run you a cool $24.

It hasn’t hit the mainstream yet, but I feel confident that cephalopod/bear mashups will be the big Internet meme of 2011.
